What Does Medicare Part A & Part B Not Cover?

This does not include private health insurance (i.e., advantage plans)

Private Insurance Plan Options (Supplements)

Advantage Plans

These are also known as Medicare Part C plans. These are an ‘all in one’ alternatives to Original Medicare. These private insurance plans usually bundle Part A, Part B and usually Part D. They typically have co-pays and out-of-pocket expenses. Most offer extra benefits not found in Original Medicare. Such as dental, vision, hearing, over the counter products and fitness memberships and much more. These plans are approved by Medicare and must follow Medicare’s coverage rules. Each Medicare Advantage plan can charge a different out of pocket cost. Some premiums can be as low as $0 per month.

Medigap Plans

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is extra insurance you can purchase to ‘fill in the gaps’ that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. These can be purchased from a private insurance company to help pay your out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare. Such as co-pays, coinsurance and deductibles. There are 10 different types of Medigap plans available in most states. They are named by letters, A-D, F, G and K-N.

Due to health reasons, coverage can be denied or premiums increased (except initial eligibility). All plans have a monthly premium and coverage varies by plans.

Prescription Drug Plans

A prescription drug plan (PDP) is an insurance plan that covers the cost of take-home, prescribed medication. PDPs are also known as Medicare Part D. These plans follow a standard of coverage set by Medicare. Costs can vary and so can specific drug coverage. How much you pay for each drug depends upon which plan you choose. Plans have different premiums. Prescription coverage can be included in Advantage plans or purchased as a separate plan. You can also purchase this plan as an ‘add on’ to a Medigap plan or as an ‘add on’ to an Original Medicare plan.
